Patios and walks made using paving stones will far outlast concrete or comparable materials, provide much more variety in material choices, and are more aesthetically pleasing.

“Dry set” pavers are laid on a solid foundation but do not use mortar.  This allows the stones to move independently and eliminates cracked/chipped mortar and loose stones.
